The United States assesses the 2010 presidential elections in Ukraine as another step in the consolidation of democracy in the country.
Ukrainian News learned this from a statement by the Embassy of the United States in Ukraine concerning the presidential elections in the country.
"The election provided a choice among candidates in a calm atmosphere followed freely by the media. We welcome the high turnout of voters. The conduct of both the first and second rounds reflect another step in the consolidation of Ukraine's democracy," reads the statement.
The United States commends the Ukrainian people on the conduct of the February 7 second round of presidential elections, which international observers have assessed positively in their preliminary conclusions.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the international election observation mission, which consists of representatives of the European Parliament, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the council of Europe, and NATO, has said that the second round of the Ukrainian presidential elections met democratic standards.
The mission of observers of the Interparliamentary assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States consider that the second round of presidential elections was held in a line with the international standards.
